Dream Travel Destinations 2026: It's the People — Not the Places

11 dream destinations for singles, couples and families — described in depth with photo spots, best time to travel and a people-first focus: Thailand, Maldives, Japan, Costa Rica and more. Plus curated photo trips for groups.

Dream travel destinations — shared moments by the pool with a view of the sea

Everyone knows the Instagram list: Maldives, Santorini, Bali, safari, northern lights. As a photographer and trip organiser I've passed a hundred "dream places" — and after years on the road one thing is clear: The location is scenery. The dream trip happens between people.

That can be the best friend you've wanted to travel with since school. The partner sitting quietly by the sea with you for the first time. The kids bursting with excitement while snorkelling. Or strangers in a hostel kitchen in Chiang Mai who become friends overnight.

This guide describes 11 dream destinations in depth — each with its own image, concrete tips, photo spots and honest assessment of who it's for. The thesis stays the same: who you travel with or who you meet on the road decides whether it's unforgettable or merely beautiful. At the end: why I offer photo trips in small groups.

Planning: Plan a photo trip, Packing list. More inspiration: March travel destinations, November & winter, Most beautiful vacation spots Germany.

Philosophy

Not the place — the people

I don't remember a single perfect sunset photo. I remember the laughter afterwards, the conversation in the taxi, the person who showed me the spot.

Martin Kleinheinz

Dream travel destinations are sold in catalogues like furniture: the view here, the pool there, the volcano behind. What the brochure doesn't show: You can stand alone on the world's most beautiful beach and feel empty. Or have the best week of your life in a mediocre hotel with the right group.

The people you travel with
Partner, friends, family, curated group. They set pace, depth, humour and whether a trip becomes memories or just content.
The people you meet on the road
Hosts, guides, locals at the bar, fellow travellers on the train. They open doors no guidebook lists — and give a place a soul.
The place as a stage
Thailand, Maldives, Iceland — yes, they're spectacular. But they're the backdrop for the human story. That's why I describe each destination here not only visually, but also by what encounters it enables.

Dream travel destinations 2026 — comparison by trip type, people factor and photo potential

Below you'll find each destination covered in depth — with image, atmosphere, concrete places, photo spots and the people aspect. Japan appears for both singles and couples, but is only described in full once.

Singles

Four dream destinations for solo travellers

Singles don't need loneliness — they need options. Open culture, social infrastructure (hostels, group activities), safety and the likelihood of meeting like-minded people. These four destinations deliver that reliably.

1. Thailand — social, beautiful, uncomplicated

Thailand dream destination — karst cliffs and turquoise sea in Krabi
Thailand: the scenery is dreamy — what matters is who you share it with.

When singles ask me "Where should I go alone?", my answer has been the same for years: Thailand. Not because every beach is wallpaper material — but because the country is social. Open. Easy to connect. You don't have to travel lonely just because you booked solo.

The classic route Bangkok → Chiang Mai → islands covers three worlds: street food and rooftop bars in the capital, temples and mountains in the north, beach and diving in the south. Hostels with common rooms, cooking classes, Muay Thai camps and group excursions — you're never forced to be alone, but always free to want it.

Thais are hospitable without being pushy. Someone talks to you in a bar. The boat driver tells you about his island. Many solo travellers on similar routes — on trains, ferries, in cafés. "Where are you heading next?" is the most common sentence. My best conversations were in food stalls and at the ferry terminal, not in front of the Instagram spot.

Highlights
Bangkok Chinatown & Chatuchak, Chiang Mai temples at sunrise, Koh Tao (diving), Krabi (climbing), Koh Samui (comfort)
Ideal for
First solo trip, backpacker to boutique, singles 25–45, open personalities
Human moment
Hostel kitchen in Chiang Mai, group cooking class, bar conversation on Khao San — or curated group on the Koh Samui expedition
Best time
Nov–Feb (cool & dry), Mar–Apr (hot, before Songkran); avoid: monsoon Jun–Oct on Andaman coast
Duration
14–21 days for the full route; 7 days for Bangkok + one island
Budget
Low to mid — €40–80/day backpacker, €100–150/day comfort
Photo spots
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (morning light), Railay Beach, longtail boats Krabi, street food Yaowarat
Tip
Book group activities (day tour, yoga retreat) — people around you instantly. Koh Samui Expedition: Apply now

2. Portugal — a safe entry point in Europe

Portugal dream destination — Lisbon Alfama at sunset
Portugal: Lisbon for culture, Algarve for sun — perfect for a first solo trip in Europe.

Portugal is the underrated solo classic in Europe: safe, affordable, English-friendly and with an international crowd that isn't just looking for party. Lisbon alone is already a dream trip — seven hills, fado in Alfama, pastéis de nata in Belém, yellow trams and rooftop bars with Atlantic views.

The Algarve complements it perfectly: surf camps in Ericeira (also for non-surfers — the community is open), hostels in Lagos with cliff walks, empty beaches outside high season. Many digital nomads and solo travellers — in coworking cafés, on the coast, on the ferry to Porto. Less exotic than Thailand, but without jet lag and without visa stress.

Highlights
Lisbon Alfama & LX Factory, Sintra (palaces), Ericeira surf, Lagos Ponta da Piedade, Porto Ribeira
Ideal for
First solo trip in Europe, 25–40, relaxed personalities, budget-conscious
Human moment
Surf camp housemates, hostel dinner in Lagos, fado evening with table neighbours in Alfama
Best time
Mar–Jun and Sep–Oct ideal; Jul–Aug hot and crowded on the Algarve
Duration
7–10 days: 4 Lisbon + 3 Algarve; 14 days with Porto
Budget
Low — €50–90/day including accommodation and food
Photo spots
Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, Benagil Cave (boat), yellow tram 28, Porto Ribeira at blue hour
Tip
Not just Lisbon — the Algarve brings nature and other solo travellers. More March inspiration: March travel destinations

3. Japan — allowed to be alone, without being lonely

Japan dream destination — Kyoto temple with cherry blossom
Japan: quiet encounters with depth — equally dreamy for singles and couples.

Japan is the paradox among dream destinations: many travel solo there because you can be alone without being lonely. Nobody stares, nobody pushes. Counter dining (izakaya), capsule hotels, night trains, onsen — quiet encounters with depth instead of loud hostel party.

Tokyo delivers energy: Shibuya, Shimokitazawa, TeamLab, ramen alleys. Kyoto delivers soul: Philosopher's Path, Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama bamboo, traditional ryokan. During cherry blossom (late March–mid April) or autumn foliage (Nov) Japan becomes a dream trip for photographers — and for couples seeking quiet romance (ryokan, onsen, kaiseki).

Japan is not the most social solo destination — you'll find connection more in bars, Couchsurfing events or organised food tours than randomly on the street. But: maximum safety, maximum courtesy, maximum aesthetics. If you travel introverted and want depth instead of party: Japan.

Highlights
Tokyo Shibuya & Asakusa, Kyoto Philosopher's Path & Fushimi Inari, Nara deer, Hakone onsen, Osaka street food
Ideal for
Singles (introverted to curious), couples (Kyoto/ryokan), culture and photo travellers, bucket list
Human moment
Izakaya counter conversation, fellow travellers on the Shinkansen, ryokan hostess explains tea ceremony
Best time
Cherry blossom late Mar–Apr, autumn foliage Oct–Nov; summer humid-hot, winter cold but empty
Duration
10–14 days for Tokyo + Kyoto + day trip; 3 weeks for depth
Budget
High — €100–180/day; JR Pass worth it with several Shinkansen rides
Photo spots
Fushimi Inari early morning, Arashiyama bamboo, Shibuya Crossing blue hour, Kiyomizu-dera
Tip
For couples: book a ryokan in Kyoto — onsen and kaiseki beat any beach resort. Timing: March travel destinations

4. Iceland — midnight sun and shared wonder

Iceland dream destination — waterfall and dramatic landscape
Iceland: lonely as a strict solo trip — magical as a small group.

Iceland is visually overwhelming: waterfalls, black beaches, glacier lagoons, volcanic landscapes, northern lights in winter, midnight sun in summer. As a strict solo trip though lonely and expensive — rental car alone, restaurants full of couples, hotel room prices that hurt.

As a small group Iceland becomes a dream trip: Ring Road, hot pots under open sky, shared wonder at Gullfoss, laughter in the rain at Skógafoss. The landscape almost demands a shared experience — if you photograph alone, you get great images; if you drive as a pair or in a group, you get stories.

Highlights
Golden Circle, south coast (Skógafoss, Reynisfjara), Jökulsárlón, Blue Lagoon, Westfjords (advanced)
Ideal for
Small groups (3–6), photographers, adventurers; solo only with social hostels in Reykjavik
Human moment
Shared northern lights waiting, hot pot with strangers, ride-share Ring Road
Best time
Jun–Aug (midnight sun, hiking), Sep–Mar (northern lights, fewer tourists)
Duration
7–10 days Ring Road; 5 days Golden Circle + south coast compact
Budget
High — €150–250/day including rental car and accommodation
Photo spots
Kirkjufell at sunset, Diamond Beach, Reynisfjara (watch the waves!), Seljalandsfoss behind the waterfall
Tip
Group trip or 2–3 friends — solo only recommended if you actively seek hostel contacts. Alternative: Photo trips
03
Couples

Four dream destinations for couples

Couples need room for each other — not an 8:15 bus obligation and not five sightseeing spots a day. The best dream trips as a pair are the ones where silence on the terrace is enough, conversations regain depth and nobody disturbs. Japan (see singles chapter) complements this list as a fifth couple destination.

1. Maldives — space, sea, quality time

Maldives dream destination — overwater bungalow and turquoise lagoon water
Maldives: couples' holiday at world-class level — few distractions, lots of room for each other.

For couples I recommend the Maldives — not as a cliché, but as a conscious choice: Nowhere else are you so undisturbed. One resort, one bungalow, sea, food, sleep, conversations. No sightseeing stress. No "quickly hit the five top spots". Just the two of you and the scenery — and that's exactly what lets relationships breathe.

The overwater villa is more than Instagram material: private access to the water, breakfast on the terrace, starry sky without city lights. Snorkelling together, sunset cruise, spa — activities that create connection, not distraction. At good resorts you notice the people who make your stay personal: butler, dive guide, chef. Learn names. Say thanks. Come back.

Highlights
Overwater villa, house reef snorkelling, sunset dinner, sandbank picnic, spa for two
Ideal for
Couples (honeymoon, anniversary, conscious break), 28–55, quality over quantity
Human moment
Conversation on the villa terrace under the stars; guide shows you hidden reef
Best time
Dec–Apr (dry season, expensive); May–Nov cheaper with weather risk
Duration
4–7 days is enough — one resort, not five islands
Budget
Very high — €300–800+/day per person depending on resort and board
Photo spots
Villa terrace sunset, underwater at house reef, sandbank by drone (observe resort rules)
Tip
Early booking, half board, choose one resort. More premium context: November & winter

2. Lake Como — romance with culture

Lake Como dream destination — villa on the lake with boat and Alpine panorama
Lake Como: villa, wooden boat, Milan aperitivo — Europe's most elegant couples' trip.

Lake Como is Europe's answer to exotic long-haul travel: elegant villas, wooden boats on deep blue water, Alps as backdrop, Milan an hour away for aperitivo and design. Less beach, more atmosphere — and therefore perfect for couples who want to combine culture and nature.

I know the region from our [Lake Como Content Trip](/en/lake-como-content-trip/) — just as dreamy for couples without a camera focus: Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, Villa del Balbianello (Star Wars location), hiking trails with lake views. Hotels on the water or agriturismo in the hills. Trattoria in the evening, cappuccino by the shore in the morning.

Highlights
Bellagio & Varenna, Villa del Balbianello, water taxi between villages, Brunate (funicular), Milan Duomo
Ideal for
Couples 30–60, culture and food travellers, honeymoon in Europe
Human moment
Boat driver tells family history of the villa; aperitivo with view of the lake
Best time
Apr–Jun and Sep–Oct (pleasant, less crowded); Jul–Aug touristy and hot
Duration
4–6 days Lake Como + optional 1–2 days Milan
Budget
High — €150–300/day; off-season and hill hotels save money
Photo spots
Varenna lakeside promenade, Villa Balbianello garden, Brunate panorama, Bellagio from boat
Tip
Boat instead of car between villages — more relaxed and more photogenic

3. Santorini — icon with moderation

Santorini dream destination — white houses with blue dome over the caldera
Santorini: dreamy — but only with the right hotel and the right person.

Santorini is the Instagram icon par excellence: white houses, blue domes, caldera view, sunsets in Oia. Beautiful — and overcrowded. The dream trip only works with moderation: the right hotel (Imerovigli or Firostefani instead of Oia crowds), the right season (May, Sep instead of August), and the person with whom silence on the terrace is enough.

Before 8 a.m. Oia is still human. After that the buses arrive. My tip for couples: Imerovigli — quieter, same caldera view, better hotels with private terrace. Wine tour, catamaran to the volcanic island, black beach Perissa — enough programme, but not too much. Evenings: taverna in Megalochori where locals still eat.

Highlights
Caldera walk Fira–Oia, Oia sunset (early!), wine tasting, catamaran, Akrotiri
Ideal for
Couples (honeymoon, anniversary), photographer couples, 28–50
Human moment
Breakfast on the caldera terrace without crowds; winemaker explains Assyrtiko
Best time
May–Jun, Sep–Oct; Aug overcrowded and hot; Nov–Apr many hotels closed
Duration
4–5 days — Santorini alone, not as island-hopping stress
Budget
High — €150–350/day; caldera hotels drive the price
Photo spots
Blue hour Oia (mornings!), Imerovigli caldera, three blue domes in Megalochori, Perissa black beach
Tip
Not in August. Book hotel with terrace — sunset from the room instead of caldera parking lot

4. Moselle Valley — romance on your doorstep

Moselle Valley dream destination — vineyards and river bend with castle
Moselle Valley: closer, cheaper, equally romantic — when switching off is the goal.

Not every dream trip needs a long-haul flight. The Moselle Valley proves: switching off together works 200 kilometres from Hannover too. Steep-slope vineyards, river bends, castles on every second cliff, Riesling at the winery, little boats on the river — romance without jet lag.

Cochem with Reichsburg castle, Bernkastel-Kues with half-timbered houses, Traben-Trarbach in Art Nouveau style, Ediger-Eller (Germany's oldest wine house). For couples who don't need a wanderlust show but real time: walk by the river, tasting, dinner with view of the vineyards. Hosts at wine hotels are often the best storytellers.

Highlights
Cochem Reichsburg, Bernkastel market square, Moselle boat trip, Calmont via ferrata (fit couples), winery tasting
Ideal for
Couples of any age, short break, food travellers, first weekend together
Human moment
Winemaker explains vintage at the cellar table; boat captain comments on castles
Best time
Apr–Oct; Sep–Oct harvest atmosphere; Dec Christmas markets in Cochem
Duration
3–4 days — drive slowly, don't tick everything off
Budget
Low — €80–140/day with good hotel and tasting
Photo spots
Reichsburg Cochem from the river, Bernkastel early morning, vineyard panorama at Ediger-Eller
Tip
Wine hotel instead of chain hotel — more personal, better breakfast. More: Most beautiful vacation spots

Families

Three dream destinations for families

Family dream trips are different: it's about shared memories kids will still tell in 20 years — and parents who aren't exhausted after three days. Fewer spots, more time. A beach day without a plan is often the best day.

1. Costa Rica — adventure that connects

Costa Rica dream destination — rainforest with suspension bridge and volcano
Costa Rica: monkeys at breakfast, zip-line with the kids — adventure for everyone.

Costa Rica is my top tip for families: rainforest, volcanoes, beaches, wildlife — and infrastructure that works with kids. Monkeys on the way to breakfast. Zip-line with 10-year-olds. Hot springs after the hike at Arenal. The kids are busy; the parents marvel with them.

The route Arenal → Monteverde → Pacific coast covers three worlds: volcano and hot springs in the north, cloud forest and suspension bridges in the mountains, beach and surfing on the coast. Guides who take kids seriously. Other families at the eco-lodge. The shared "wow" at the first sloth or turtle nest — that stays, not the hotel room.

Highlights
Arenal volcano & hot springs, Monteverde Cloud Forest, Manuel Antonio National Park, zip-line, turtles (seasonal)
Ideal for
Families with children from 6–7 (can hike); teenagers love the adventure component
Human moment
Guide shows kids toucan in telescope; other family at lodge over shared dinner
Best time
Dec–Apr (dry season); green and cheaper May–Nov with afternoon rain
Duration
10–14 days — not everything in five days
Budget
Mid — €120–200/day for 4 people with lodge and activities
Photo spots
Arenal reflection in the lake, Monteverde suspension bridge, Manuel Antonio beach, hummingbirds at feeder
Tip
Book driver with van — flexible with kids. Stay at one lodge longer instead of packing daily

2. Norway — fjords and shared wonder

Norway dream destination — Geirangerfjord with waterfall and steep cliff
Norway: being outdoors, together — fjords, waterfalls, midsummer light.

Norway delivers for families who want to be outdoors together instead of theme parks: fjords, waterfalls, hiking, kayaking, midsummer light. Safe, clean, nature-connected. Kids can climb, paddle, hike — within reasonable limits.

Geirangerfjord, Flåm, Bergen as base, Lofoten for advanced travellers. Holiday cottages (hytte) with other European families as neighbours. Norwegians are reserved but friendly — kids are taken seriously. Weather is the variable: pack for all four seasons, even in July.

Highlights
Geirangerfjord, Flåm Railway, Bergen Bryggen, Preikestolen (from 10+), North Cape (teenagers)
Ideal for
Active families, nature lovers, children from 8; less for beach-only families
Human moment
Shared fjord ferry; midsummer night hike; hytte neighbours share campfire
Best time
Jun–Aug (hiking, midsummer); Feb (winter, northern lights — colder, shorter days)
Duration
7–12 days; fjords need time (ferries, switchbacks)
Budget
High — €150–250/day; hytte and self-catering save money
Photo spots
Geirangerfjord from viewpoint, Flåm valley, Lofoten Reine (long journey within Norway)
Tip
Don't drive too much — one region per week. Rain jacket for everyone, always

3. Crete — beach, history, hospitality

Crete dream destination — turquoise bay with white village
Crete: swimming, palaces, tavernas — Greek hospitality for the whole family.

Crete combines the best of family holidays: swimming in turquoise bays, short hikes (Samaria Gorge for the fit from 10), palaces of Knossos, Greek hospitality in tavernas — kids are spoiled, parents eat well. Less jet lag than the US, cheaper than the Caribbean, more family-friendly than Mykonos.

Chania with Venetian harbour, Elafonissi (pink sand beach), Balos Lagoon (boat trip), Lasithi Plateau. Hotels with pool and half board — parents relax, kids splash. Evening taverna: grandmother brings extra dessert for the children. That is the human moment no all-inclusive buffet can replace.

Highlights
Chania old harbour, Elafonissi, Balos (boat), Knossos, Samaria Gorge (fit families)
Ideal for
Families with children 4–16, beach + light culture, first Greece trip
Human moment
Taverna owner explains olive harvest to kids; boat driver to Balos Lagoon
Best time
May–Jun, Sep–Oct (warm, not overcrowded); Jul–Aug hot and crowded
Duration
7–10 days — one base (Chania or Rethymno) + 2–3 excursions
Budget
Mid — €100–160/day for 4 people with family hotel
Photo spots
Chania harbour at blue hour, Elafonissi from above, Balos Lagoon from the air (boat)
Tip
Family-run taverna instead of tourist trap at the harbour — Google Maps reviews with "authentic"
05
Groups

Group trips — when the group makes the trip

Group trips have a bad image: 40 people with flags, mandatory bus, 8:15 breakfast. That's not what I mean. I mean small, curated groups — people who tick similarly, travel similarly, want to create similarly. Creators, entrepreneurs, photographers, ambitious personalities.

The best trips of my life were never solo trips to famous places. They were weeks with people I didn't know before — and didn't want to let go of afterwards.

Martin Kleinheinz

Why I offer photo trips

I'm a photographer. I travel for images — but I stayed for the conversations by the pool, the shared sunrises, the networks that form. That's why I offer [Luxury Content Trips & Photo Trips](/en/photo-trips/): small groups, high-quality accommodation, thoughtful locations — and people you wouldn't meet otherwise.

Small groups
6–16 participants depending on format — never mass tourism.
Curated
Application or invitation — so chemistry fits, not just the credit card.
Content & real experiences
Professional images yes — but no programme cinema. Time for pool, conversation, spontaneous ideas.
Networking on the side
Many participants are self-employed, creators, entrepreneurs. Connections after the trip are often more valuable than the places.
Content Trip Mallorca — group on catamaran
Content Trip Mallorca 2025: Eight participants, shared shooting days — the group made the trip.

Practice

Finding the right people — on the road & from home

Whether single in Thailand or couple in the Maldives: you can increase the chance that people enrich your trip — without leaving it to chance alone.

Start with the right people from home
Friends, partner, family — clarify honestly before booking: What do we want? Pace? Budget? Alone time? A week with the wrong travel companion ruins the most beautiful place.
Curated group trips
Photo trips, retreats, expeditions with application — the filtering is a feature, not a bug. Photo trips are built exactly for that.
Open up on the road
Hostel common rooms, cooking classes, walking tours, bar conversations. In Thailand: a "Sawasdee" is often enough. In Japan: respect and curiosity. Locals aren't scenery — they're hosts.
Travel slowly
If you tick off four cities in five days, you only meet surfaces. One week one place = real relationships with people on the ground.
Digital minimal
If you scroll Instagram by the pool, you miss the conversation next to you. The dream trip happens when you're present.
07
Conclusion

Your dream destination — and with whom?

Singles: Thailand, Portugal, Japan, Iceland — social to introverted, near to far. Couples: Maldives, Lake Como, Santorini, Moselle Valley, Japan — room for each other. Families: Costa Rica, Norway, Crete — shared adventures. Groups: Curated trips where the group fits — my photo trips.

The world's most beautiful places are waiting. But don't just pack your suitcase — pack the right people. Or meet them on the road. Or apply for a trip where they're already waiting for you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about dream destinations

What is a dream travel destination?
Subjective — but in common: a place that moves you emotionally and becomes unforgettable with the right people. Thailand for singles, Maldives for couples, Costa Rica for families are classics — because they enable experiences and encounters.
Why are people more important than the place?
Because memories are social. The sunset photo fades. The conversation afterwards, the shared wonder, the person who gave you the insider tip — that stays. A dream trip without connection is tourism.
Where should singles travel?
Thailand (social scene, hostels, group activities), Portugal (safe Europe entry point), Japan (depth instead of party), Iceland (better in a small group). For a curated group: Expedition Koh Samui or other photo trips.
Where should couples travel?
Maldives for maximum retreat. Lake Como, Santorini, Moselle Valley for romance with culture or nearby holiday. Japan (Kyoto/ryokan) for quiet depth. Important: one resort or hotel, not five stops.
Which dream trip for families with children?
Costa Rica (nature, adventure, safe), Norway (fjords, outdoor), Crete (beach + culture + hospitality). Less programme, more shared time.
How long should a dream trip last?
Maldives/Santorini: 4–7 days. Thailand/Portugal/Crete: 7–14 days. Japan/Costa Rica: 10–14 days. Moselle Valley: 3–4 days. Better longer at one place than briefly many spots.
What are Martin Kleinheinz's photo trips?
Luxury Content Trips in small groups: villas, curated participants, photo and video production, networking. Currently including Fitness Trip Faro 2026 and Expedition Koh Samui 2027. All info: /en/photo-trips/
Do I have to be an influencer for a photo trip?
No. What matters is standards for aesthetics, openness and shared level — not follower count. Creators, entrepreneurs, photographers and ambitious personalities are welcome.
Can I join a group trip as a single?
Yes — most participants come alone and find connection in the group. Application or booking via the respective trip page under /en/photo-trips/
Which dream destination is the cheapest?
Moselle Valley and Portugal (from €50–90/day). Thailand and Crete mid-range. Maldives, Iceland, Lake Como and Norway are upper price range — but worth it as a conscious investment in quality time.
