"What does a business photo actually cost?" sounds like a number — and that's exactly where the misunderstanding starts. Under the same label you'll find entry-level studio sessions, LinkedIn packages, team-photo days and full-day image productions. Ranges stretch from a few hundred into well into four figures. If you only compare the lowest amount, you rarely compare the same service. This article sorts the orientation — and, when you want to book, points you clearly to Business Photography.

I write this as a photographer in Hannover who offers business and team photography myself. The euro amounts here are orientation ranges from publicly visible offers and my industry research — not a fixed price list and not "this is what it always costs." Many quotes list amounts net, often plus VAT. You should factor that into every comparison.

What you'll take away: realistic corridors for individual, team and day rates, what really sits inside the price, why usage rights shape the final figure, which traps cost clients dearly — and when a smartphone or DIY is enough. For the on-set workflow and the series itself, Employee Portraits & Corporate Photos is worth reading in parallel.

Overview: who this pricing guide is for

This article is for people who book business photos — not for photographers calculating their hourly rate. If you want to set your own prices, the matching guide is Photographer Pricing Guide. Here it's the client view: what's market-typical, what's included, and which budget fits your project.

Freelancers & solo founders
You need a strong portrait for website and LinkedIn — often a package, rarely a full team-photo day.
HR, marketing & leadership
You're planning employee portraits, employer branding or a team-photo day — consistency and rights matter more than a single image.
Law firms, medical practices, consultancies
Trust industries: faces on the website are part of how you present yourselves. Clarity on usage rights matters especially here.

A quick note on the LinkedIn discussion that's often misquoted: according to LinkedIn, profiles with a photo get clearly more views than profiles without a photo (often cited: up to 21× more profile views and 9× more connection requests). That's a comparison of with vs. without an image — not proof that only a studio pro photo works. A good smartphone shot beats an empty avatar icon. For website, team and trust industries, the math still shifts clearly toward a pro — more on that in section 06.

What costs what: orientation ranges

The table below summarizes ranges visible in German offers and industry overviews in 2025/26. Read them as a corridor, not a tariff. Whether you land at the lower or upper end depends on headcount, location, retouch depth and usage rights — and on whether you book a chain studio or a B2B production.

ServiceOrientation rangeTypical scope
Individual / headshot (solid B2B)approx. €150–80045–90 min, a few final images, basic retouching
Premium / executive / C-levelapprox. €800–1,800+Briefing, multiple looks, extended retouching, often broader rights
LinkedIn package (studio)approx. €70–350Short session, 1–5 final images
LinkedIn / profile on-location premiumapprox. €350–800On site, concept, consulting, often incl. web/social rights
Small team (up to ~10 people)approx. €600–1,500Consistent setup, few images per person
Team-photo day (approx. 10–30 people)approx. €1,200–2,500Mobile studio, 2–5 final images per person
Half day (~3–4 hrs)approx. €400–1,500Portraits and/or reportage share
Full day (~6–8 hrs)approx. €800–3,500Team + ambience; premium/metro often higher

Orientation ranges Germany 2025/26 — often net, plus VAT. Scope of work decides, not the label name.

Infographic: orientation ranges for business photography from LinkedIn package to team-photo day and full day
From a short package to a team-photo day — the same headline "business photo" can mean very different budgets

From my own industry research in Photographer Statistics: business portraits / B2B often sit around about €100–200/h, a half day typically around about €400–800 — as market orientation, not my or anyone's fixed offer. Packages and day rates dominate in B2B because companies need budget certainty.

You're not paying for "one hour of camera" — you're paying for a result you can legally use on the website, LinkedIn and in recruiting communication.

Calculation

What's inside the price: the building blocks

Anyone who only sees time in front of the camera underestimates the job. A professional business shoot is made of several building blocks — and each costs time or know-how. That's exactly why a "cheap" hourly rate can end up more expensive than a clear package.

Infographic cost building blocks for business photography: prep, shoot, selection, retouching, usage rights, travel
Six building blocks — prep, shoot, selection, retouching, usage rights and travel — make up the real price
Preparation
Briefing, mood, outfit notes, scheduling with HR, location check. Often invisible to you — but decisive for a consistent result.
Shoot
Lighting setup, posing coaching, camera time. On location adds setup time; in the studio the entry is often leaner.
Selection
Gallery, feedback, possibly re-selection. With teams, admin effort multiplies with every person.
Retouching
Basics (exposure, color, skin) are often included. High-end, cutouts or heavy corrections can run per image or as an add-on.
Usage rights
Where, how long and how exclusively you may use the images. Can raise the price noticeably — details in section 04.
Travel & location
A radius is often included; beyond that a km flat rate or surcharge. On location brings authenticity but costs setup time.

Extras like makeup, styling or express delivery are optional — but often useful for C-level, law firms or medical practices. They belong transparently in the quote, not as a surprise on the invoice.

03
Models

Package, hour or day — what fits when?

You'll meet three billing models on the market. For companies and HR, a package or half/full day is usually the clearer path. The hourly rate helps photographers internally with calculation — as a client you mainly need a defined delivery scope.

ModelWhen it makes senseWhat you watch for
Hourly rateUnclear scope, very small jobsPost-production and rights often separate — total budget uncertain
Package priceClear quantity: X minutes, Y final imagesCheck scope and rights in the text; clarify add-on images pricing
Half day / day rateTeams, reportage, employer brandingMore efficient than hours × many people; factor in setup time

For HR, law firms and practices, package or half/full day is usually easier to budget than pure hourly billing.

Rule of thumb: the more people and the more important consistency, the more a day or team package makes sense. An individual headshot for the website books well as a package. If you want to look behind the pricing logic — fixed costs, non-billable time, taxes — that's in Photographer Pricing Guide.

  • An hourly rate alone says little about the end result
  • Packages need a clear image count and rights clause
  • Day rates pay off when setup is built once and many people follow
04
Legal

Usage rights: the second price body

A widespread misconception: "We paid, so the images belong to us." In Germany, copyright stays with the photographer. What you acquire are usage rights — mainly governed by § 31 UrhG (German Copyright Act). Without a clear agreement, purpose transfer applies: often only what was necessary for the recognizable contract purpose. That can be narrower than you think.

What you should clarify before booking

  • Channels: website, LinkedIn/social, print, ads, press?
  • Duration: limited or unlimited?
  • Territory: regional, Germany, EU, worldwide?
  • Simple or exclusive usage rights?
  • Passing on to agencies or partners allowed?
  • Are production and license listed separately in the quote?

In parallel, the right to one's own image of the people depicted applies — separate from copyright. For team photos you need both in view: the license from the photographer and consent from employees. Orientation values for license calculations come from mfm image fees (BVPA) — non-binding market orientation, not mandatory tariffs.

In practice: license breadth can raise the final price noticeably — depending on medium, duration and exclusivity. That's not a "surcharge on principle," it's the second part of the service. Anyone booking business photos for outward presentation should have rights explicit in the quote — as usual in a proper Business Photography briefing.

05
Risks

Cost traps that get more expensive than the price difference

Most expensive mistakes don't happen on set — they happen in the comparison logic beforehand. Here are the traps I see most often with clients:

Comparing price only
Without image count, retouching, delivery deadline and rights. The cheapest amount wins on paper — and loses in practice.
Leaving rights unclear
"Everything included" without channels and duration. Later the campaign license or agency handoff costs extra — or isn't possible at all.
Cheap without commercial rights
Misusing private or entry packages for website and employer branding. Cheap short-term, risky medium-term.
No briefing
Inconsistent team photos, wrong tonality, reshoot needed. Fifteen minutes of prep often saves the second appointment.
Forgetting travel, makeup, express
Side costs missing from the quote — present on the invoice. Ask upfront.
Confusing ownership with usage rights
Owning the files does not mean you may use them everywhere without limit.
06
Decision

DIY or pro: when each makes sense

Not every image needs a studio. And not every "business photo" is done with a smartphone. The honest line:

Decision tree: when a DIY smartphone shot is enough and when professional business photography makes sense
Internal and spontaneous often DIY — website, team and trust industries clearly toward pro
SituationDIY / smartphone often OKPro clearly makes sense
Internal Slack/Teams avatarYes
Spontaneous social posts, BTSYes
LinkedIn, previously without a photoA photo beats no photoWhen competition and trust are central
Website "About me," practice, law firmOnly with good light + someone else behind the cameraStandard
Team page / employer brandingYes — consistency
Press, speaker, annual report, adsYes — plus clear rights

DIY for internal and entry use; pro once outward impact, series and commercial use matter.

For a single DIY profile picture — window light, smartphone, clear rules — the step-by-step path is in How to Create a Profile Picture. Once it's a workforce, a team page or a trust industry, the math shifts: controlled light, posing coaching, consistent retouching and a legally sound license are then the real value — not the camera brand.

07
Regional

Hannover & region: what's visible locally

Hannover tends to sit below the premium level of Munich or Hamburg on price — with a strong B2B and trade-fair economy that demands teams, reportage and on-site productions. Publicly visible local offers roughly show this picture (as of 2025/26, often plus VAT):

  • Studio entry packages and lean business series often about €110–300
  • Content and on-site packages frequently about €590–1,590 visible
  • Travel within city/surrounding radius included or flat-rate with many providers

These are examples from the local market, not a recommendation list and not a guarantee for your quote. Some studios list fixed packages; others — including me — work with an individual quote based on headcount, location, pace and usage. If you're planning in Hannover or nearby: Business Photography is the direct entry for briefing and quote.

08
Practice

Which budget do I need? Scenarios

Instead of one number: five typical starting points with corridors. Always with the note — scope of work and rights decide, and VAT often comes on top.

Freelancer / LinkedIn & website portrait
Often about €150–500 for a solid individual package; premium on location more like €350–800. Focus: one strong image plus clear web/social rights.
Medical practice / law firm (2–6 people, on site)
Often about €600–1,800 — portraits, possibly rooms/ambience. Trust industries: don't skip rights and consistency.
SME team-photo day (approx. 10–25 employees)
Often about €1,200–2,500 for a mobile studio and a few final images per person. Leaner half-day models can sit below that — check scope.
Employer-branding half/full day
Portraits plus work scenes: often about €850–3,500, depending on duration and delivery volume.
Executive / press / campaign
Executive often €800–2,000+. Ad campaigns with buy-out: production and license can each go four figures+ — calculate separately.

Takeaway: price follows scope — not the label

Business photography has no single price. It has orientation ranges that make sense once you know: How many people? Studio or on site? Which final images? Which channels and for how long? Without those answers, every comparison is false precision.

Remember the formula: price = prep + shoot + selection + retouching + usage rights + travel. Compare quotes along these building blocks — and clarify rights before the campaign starts. DIY stays legitimate for internal use and getting started; for website, team and trust industries, pro work usually pays twice: in impact and in legal certainty.

If next you want to plan a team, executives or your own business portrait in Hannover: on Business Photography you'll find the service, workflow and path to an inquiry. For set-day practice and the series, Employee Portraits & Corporate Photos helps — for DIY profile pictures How to Create a Profile Picture.

  • Use ranges — don't hunt for "the one market price"
  • Read VAT and rights in the quote
  • For teams: consistency and briefing before price dumping
  • Next step: inquire about business photography or contact

FAQ

FAQ about the costs

What does a business photo roughly cost in Germany?
There is no single market price. Solid individual/headshot packages often sit roughly between €150 and €800; premium/executive work runs higher (about €800–1,800+). Team-photo days for 10–30 people often land around €1,200–2,500. Many quotes are net, plus VAT. Scope of work including rights is what decides.
Are the prices gross or net?
Often net, plus 19% VAT. Always ask. Small-business photographers without VAT on the invoice can look cheaper — still compare delivery scope and usage rights.
Why do usage rights matter so much for the price?
You are not buying copyright — you are buying usage rights (§ 31 UrhG). Channels, duration, territory and exclusivity determine what you may legally use — and how high the license fee goes. Unclear rights are one of the most expensive traps.
Is a smartphone photo enough for LinkedIn?
For getting started: yes — a photo is clearly better than none according to LinkedIn (with vs. without a profile photo). For website, team and trust industries, a pro shoot is usually the clearer investment. DIY guide: How to Create a Profile Picture.
What does a team-photo day cost?
As orientation, often about €1,200–2,500 for mid-size teams (roughly 10–30 people), depending on final images per person, setup and rights. Smaller teams can sit below that; full-day productions with a reportage share above.
How do I calculate as a photographer myself?
Then you're on the other side of the invoice: fixed costs, non-billable time, taxes and rights — step by step in Photographer Pricing Guide. Industry figures: Photographer Statistics.
Do you offer business photography yourself?
Yes — openly and without hide-and-seek. I shoot business and team assignments in Hannover and the surrounding area. Details and inquiry: Business Photography or Contact. The price ranges in this article are market orientation, not a substitute for an individual quote.
